COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ A group of community leaders in Owensboro is building a 20,000 square foot temperature controlled warehouse—designed to store donated food safely and help local pantries serve more than 15,000 people facing hunger. The project needs $4.35 million with $1.2 million already raised including a $100,000 pledge from the city—officials now ask for extra funds to meet the remaining cost. The Owensboro Times
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Jeremiah Byrd pleaded guilty to the June 21, 2023 murder of Gaymee Paw near Ben Hawes Park — he faces a 25-year prison term with 20 years for murder, and his sentencing hearing is set for May 23 when Paw's family may testify. 44 News
- ➤ Montae Goodnight, a 37-year-old Owensboro man, was sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for meth distribution, possession with intent to distribute and possessing a firearm as a convicted felon — he will also face five years of supervised release. 14 News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Three quilt squares from Owensboro Middle School were chosen for a national exhibit at the Kennedy Center—part of the EARTH to SPACE festival running from March 28 to April 20. The project started as a classroom art project and led to a full-size quilt that will be shown later this spring at the Owensboro Public Schools Fine Arts Festival—showing local teamwork. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The City of Owensboro is asking residents for input on its 2025-2029 Consolidated Plan and 2025-2026 Annual Action Plan as it prepares to submit the plans to HUD. Residents can review the plans at the Community Development office or online and must send comments by April 18, 2025 — a second public hearing is planned later. City of Owensboro
- ➤ Beginning Monday, Mar 17, RWRA will close West 9th Street from Omega Street to Penbrooke Avenue for sewer repairs + drivers should expect detours in the area. The closure is expected to last less than one week pending no delays or inclement weather + local motorists are advised to plan alternative routes. City of Owensboro
