COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local families can enjoy yard sales and Easter events planned across town this weekend. Highlights include Girls Day Out at the Convention Center (12-6 p.m.) on Saturday and multiple egg hunts, free photo sessions, and moving sales held at various community spots starting Friday.  WOMI Owensboro
  • Owensboro will expand its 4th of July celebration this year to honor America’s 250th anniversary; free family-friendly events include a drone show on Friday, July 3 and a riverfront fireworks display on Saturday, July 4.  14 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Retired Lt. Gen. Steven L. Basham spoke yesterday morning at the Rooster Booster breakfast at the Owensboro Convention Center. He said teamwork, preparation, and taking calculated risks help both military missions and local businesses (hosted by the Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce).  The Owensboro Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Thursday morning, a Tuskegee Airmen Commemoration Day program at the Owensboro-Daviess County Regional Airport honored the courageous first Black aviators with speeches, a display for local hero Lt. Milton T. Hall, and a proclamation from Daviess County Judge-Executive Charlie Castlen.  The Owensboro Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Burns Middle School hosted its annual multicultural festival Thursday where students shared their cultural heritage & celebrated the diverse community. Principal Kendra Bronsink said the student-led event deepened understanding and belonging among classmates.  14 News
  • Gov. Beshear will receive House Bill 253 (focusing on phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension) that changes early reading instruction as it phases out three-cueing methods by 2029-30 to give teachers time to adjust.  WDRB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The DOJ released a report Thursday recommending that New Beginnings update written policies for two grants totaling $761,863. The support center has already put new procedures in place to improve performance reporting and personnel cost tracking to meet federal grant requirements.  44 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Owensboro Health reported that proposed federal and state healthcare changes could cost the system up to $50 million a year (CEO Mark Marsh said policy shifts pose significant uncertainty). It will also launch a mobile mammography unit this year to serve rural areas.  The Owensboro Times
