COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local outreach groups gathered on Tuesday at Kendall-Perkins Park to help families displaced by Monday's bulldozing of Tent City. Volunteers handed out tents, sleeping bags, food, and toiletries as neighbors came together to support those in need.  14 News
  • Friends of Sinners announced it received a $100K donation from Michael E Horn Family Foundation to support renovations for its new men's residential facility. The improvements aim to provide better living conditions for residents.  Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer

CULTURE NEWS

  • Sabella, a lively five-year-old who won the Cotton Tail Contest, thanked the community for their support — she now looks forward to a prize trip to Big Splash Adventure and Wilstem Wildlife Park.  WOMI Owensboro
  • Owensboro native Ty Herndon released his memoir last week, What Mattered Most, detailing his struggles with addiction, mental health and his rise in country music after returning home in 1997. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Governor Beshear signed two education bills Tuesday morning in Frankfort. HB 307 creates a program to ease college admissions for students and HB 642 raised retired teachers' daily earnings limit to $200.  WAVE
  • OCTC Workforce Solutions and the Boys and Girls Club will host Hands-On Horizons on April 15 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at OCTC’s downtown campus — 1501 Frederica Street — to give about 70 students a hands-on look at career paths in welding, veterinary care and more.  The Owensboro Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Beshear ordered flags at state buildings to be half-staff Saturday, Apr. 11 from sunrise to sunset to honor Tech. Sgt. Ashley B. Pruitt (34), who died March 12 in a KC-135 tanker crash in Iraq. Her funeral is scheduled at New Salem Baptist Church Cemetery in Cox's Creek.  44 News
  • Owensboro city officials said Tuesday they considered several ideas to address homelessness, but noted that finding lasting solutions remains difficult.  Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new WalletHub report shows Kentucky ranks 47th in children’s health care as families face high costs, limited provider access, and poor outcomes. The report gains relevance as Every Kid Healthy Week approaches on April 20.  WOMI Owensboro
  • Local leaders from Owensboro and Daviess County will visit the Life Learning Center in Covington on April 13 to study its recovery and job training programs. About 60 officials are set to see how this model may guide future use of opioid settlement funds (a hands-on effort).  The Owensboro Times
