COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pigtails & Cowlicks is hosting a multi-day spring sale that offers discounted children's clothes, toys, and more at the Owensboro Convention Center from April 23-25. Tickets are available now and range from $3 to $15 based on access level.  The Owensboro Times
  • The Sterett Foundation’s Operation Cleanup returns on April 18 at the foundation’s building on Allen Street as volunteers register at 7 a.m. for a morning of trash collection and judging by 10:30 a.m.  The Owensboro Times
  • Friends of Sinners received a $100,000 donation from the Michael E. Horn Family Foundation to support renovations for its new men's residential recovery facility in Owensboro, and the facility is 75% complete. Construction is paused as the organization secures remaining funding to double its service capacity.  The Owensboro Times
  • Owensboro’s BBQ & Barrels festival adds a new 50/50 raffle with rare bourbon prizes + a suite stay if tickets are bought by 11:59 p.m. on April 29. The two-day event runs May 8-9 with a free concert on the front lawn headlined by Chase Matthew.  WOMI Owensboro
  • Speed Park Artisan & Farmers Market will host an opening night celebration on Apr. 25 with vendors and live music.  WDRB

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Publix is set to open a store in Gateway Commons on Owensboro’s west side near Kroger, sparking competition that may lead to lower prices. The move continues Publix’s expansion after its first Kentucky opening in Boone County in 2024.  WOMI Owensboro

CULTURE NEWS

  • Owensboro native and Nashville-based artist Steve Bridgmon was named Entertainer of the Year at the 30th Inspirational Country Music Association Awards Monday at the Grand Ole Opry House; he hosted the official pre-show of The Sound of Small Town America and will release his next studio album in June.  The Owensboro Times
  • Owensboro sees a cultural revival as local shops at Wesleyan Park Plaza and social groups offer mahjong classes for all ages. The game is prized for its brain-boosting benefits (and uniting friends) during weekly meetups.  WOMI Owensboro

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kentucky lawmakers signed a classroom safety bill on Wednesday that strengthens protections for teachers. The law mandates a 12-month expulsion for students in grades 6 through 12 who harm staff while offering a pathway to return after 26 weeks if conditions are met.  WAVE

SPORTS NEWS

  • On April 7, Apollo split its doubleheader while Owensboro Catholic and Trinity (Whitesville) won their games and Owensboro lost to Clearwater Central Catholic 8 to 1. Local baseball teams played at several sites with mixed results.  The Owensboro Times
  • On April 7, the Lady Aces rallied to win 11-8 over Raceland — Saraland also shut out Apollo 3-0 with Mollie Julian throwing a complete game.  The Owensboro Times
  • On April 8, Apollo posted a 4-0 shutout against Daphne and Hancock County beat Grant County 9-2, while Owensboro Catholic won 14-3 over Paducah Tilghman. Owensboro and Trinity (Whitesville) fell in their contests.  The Owensboro Times
