Good morning, Owensboro. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 13th of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nearly 300 people gathered in Owensboro on Saturday to protest reported threats to Medicaid, Social Security, reproductive healthcare, environmental protections, and democratic institutions at the 2600 block of Frederica Street — organized by Indivisible Owensboro with groups including NAACP Owensboro, Sierra Club, Loud Women, and the Coalition for an Inclusive Daviess County. The event was originally set for April 5 but was postponed due to flooding and severe weather.  The Owensboro Times
  • Nearly perfect weather and a wider vendor variety boosted the crowd at the Owensboro Regional Farmers’ Market on Saturday—organizers said the success sets a strong tone for future market days.  Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Castlen Terminal, a privately owned river terminal in Owensboro, has been designated a Foreign Trade Zone—this federal certification allows companies to store imported goods without paying duties until they are used in production. The terminal, built in 2020 above the 100-year floodplain, continues limited operations despite the Ohio River reaching 48 feet this week and is offering commercial space to help local businesses affected by the flooding.  The Owensboro Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Owensboro High School was named one of only 26 schools nationwide and the only one in Kentucky to receive ACT’s School of Excellence Award from the American College Application Campaign — a program that helps first-generation and under-resourced students apply to college. College and Career Coach Ryun Schienbein said the honor shows the school’s work in arranging college events, campus visits and family nights and that it will continue to expand its college and career readiness programs.  The Owensboro Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Daviess County Fiscal Court updated that river flooding continues to impact communities including Birk City, Curdsville, Newman and Stanley — FEMA will assess the hardest hit areas in Owensboro. Officials ask residents to email or post photos of damage to homes, churches and businesses — that information will help officials determine next steps.  TriStateHomepage.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • In the Tri-State area, flooding has made roads dangerous—Kentucky State Police Trooper Corey King warned that 12 inches of fast-moving water can sweep a car off the road and urged drivers to obey closed-road and high-water signs.  TriStateHomepage.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today, Owensboro Catholic won the 3rd Region All A by beating Hancock County 9-1 after a 13-1 win over Trinity; Alex Hood had three hits and three RBIs and Luke Quinn pitched six innings with one unearned run—helping the team secure the title.  The Owensboro Times
