COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local groups in Owensboro will hold several Memorial Day events next week to honor veterans, including a flag placement at Memorial Gardens on May 20, a remembrance service at Greenwood Cemetery and a 27th Day of Remembrance Program on May 24, walks and a service at the Owensboro Sportscenter on May 26—volunteers are encouraged to bring food donations.  The Owensboro Times
  • A new report explains that many aid programs foster dependency in Owensboro by focusing on short-term relief rather than long-term skill building. Local shelters like St. Benedict’s Shelter and Daniel Pitino Shelter now offer programs that support self-reliance—helping individuals build lasting independence—and urge donors to rethink charity so it truly empowers those in need.  The Owensboro Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Owensboro Community and Technical College concluded its Spring Common Reading program on April 15 with writing workshops and a student essay contest inspired by the anthology This I Believe. Thirty students submitted essays and winners include Cheyenne Marshall, Laura Atkinson Ramburger, and Jasmine Maddox — whose winning entries will appear in Skylark, the college's literary journal.  The Owensboro Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ten members of the Owensboro Fire Department’s Technical Rescue Team deployed early Friday to help search for survivors after a tornado outbreak swept through Kentucky—joining rescue crews from Louisville, Covington, and Paducah in secondary searches near London-Corbin Airport. Battalion Chief Corey Gant said the team combed through damaged homes and highlighted strengthened disaster response efforts following recent state legislation.  The Owensboro Times
  • Governor Andy Beshear announced on Friday that the registration for Disaster Unemployment Assistance for those affected by February flooding is extended until May 27. Survivors who lost work due to flood damage can file their initial claim online & receive benefits lasting up to 28 weeks.  TriStateHomepage.com

  • Hand Therapy Plus Total Body Rehab, a local outpatient clinic at 122 E. 18th Street that Kelsey Carrico took over in 2019, is nearing its five-year milestone—it will hold a Client Appreciation Day on June 6 from noon to 3 to thank patients for their support.  The Owensboro Times

  • Owensboro Catholic rallied with Anna Hamilton’s three-run homer and Railey Scott’s complete game to beat Apollo 5-2, while Kamryn Timmons led Daviess County to an 8-0 win after a slow start.
