Owensboro funeral director John Hill was installed as president of the Funeral Directors Association of Kentucky at its 144th-annual convention in Louisville.

He becomes the first-ever director from Owensboro to lead the statewide group and will guide education and advocacy efforts going forward.

This weekend, the Tri-State Yard Sales & Events Guide lists local yard sales and community gatherings across Owensboro and nearby areas, featuring Friday’s event at Smothers Park with live music and street dancing and continuing through Saturday with various estate and garage sales (more sales will be added as the week progresses).

Tomorrow evening, Owensboro Regional Farmers’ Market will host a Food Truck Festival at 1205 Triplett Street featuring nearly 20 vendors, live music by Millie & Skyler, and a relaxed setting where attendees can bring lawn chairs.

Owensboro Black Expo will celebrate Juneteenth on the Ohio River tomorrow at English Park with live entertainment (EO Kids and Entice), more than 40 vendors, and family-friendly attractions; the free event starts at 4 p.m. and welcomes all ages.

Local organizations hosted a food distribution event at New Life Church on Crabtree Avenue Thursday for west end residents facing food insecurity — the event featured a mobile clinic and mammogram truck for free health services.

HomeGoods, a home décor retailer, will open its first Owensboro store at Gateway Commons on June 25 with a grand opening from 8 to 10 a.m. at (2450 Calumet Trace), and the 24,700 sqft store will later offer extended hours and donate $10,000 to a local charity.

A Throwback Thursday piece revisits cherished Owensboro restaurants including Jerry’s, Cornell’s and Ponderosa—residents shared memories and voted on which past eateries they most want to see reopen.

The Western Kentucky Botanical Garden will host its 16th Annual Dazzling Daylilies Festival tomorrow, June 20, from 4 — 7 p.m. with live bluegrass music, family activities, food vendors, and daylily sales that support the nonprofit garden.

Daviess County approved expanded parental leave offering up to 30 workdays after childbirth, and Owensboro Public Schools will vote on a similar plan for 10 workdays for adoption before the rules take effect July 1 (final OPS vote pending).

Sweats & the South opened last month on Sweeney Street and now has sold-out memberships; the wellness studio offers reformer Pilates, Power Plate training and a red room that focuses on healing and stress relief for all.

Owner Ashton Roark said the studio brings West Coast wellness to our community.
