COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local 4-H and FFA students will show their animals at a Youth Scholarship Livestock Auction on Monday, July 21 at Curtsinger Hall to raise money for scholarships or project needs—free supper is served at 5:30. Community members can bid on animals to help support the students as they work on their projects.  WOMI Owensboro
  • Owensboro Parks and Recreation Department will host a free park day on July 18 to celebrate National Parks and Recreation Month—residents can swim at Combest and Cravens pools from noon until 4:30 p.m. and skate at the Edge Ice Center from 7 to 9:30 p.m.  44 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Owensboro teacher Christie Humphrey became very ill with food poisoning on a church trip in Greece and was treated in an Athens ICU for kidney failure and liver trauma since June 25. Her family said she flew home July 10 after a GoFundMe raised over the needed funds — she is in good spirits as doctors work to solve her medical puzzle.  TriStateHomepage.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Andy Beshear said Thursday that the state property tax rate will drop to 10.6 cents for every $100 of assessed home value—down from 10.9 cents last year. The new rate will apply to all real property tax bills in Kentucky and aims to lower costs for families.  WDRB
  • Green River Area Development District Executive Director Joanna Shake announced she will retire on February 1, ending a 30-year career in economic development and regional collaboration (she informed the GRADD Board at a monthly meeting). Local leaders praised her work and commitment to the region.  The Owensboro Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • Daviess County Little League Fastpitch 12U softball team won its first state title by outscoring opponents 51—2 over four games, including a 16—1 win in the championship against Jackson County. The team will head to the Regional Tournament in Indianapolis next to earn a spot in the World Series.  The Owensboro Times
