COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Owensboro Dust Bowl organizers said they will award two more $500 scholarships, bringing the total to $2,000 for four local high school students who honor the tournament’s founders and late supporter Larry Chick Owen. Eligible students must apply by July 21 and will be recognized on July 25 at Kendall-Perkins Park—an event that continues the community’s proud tradition.  The Owensboro Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Greater Owensboro Music Commission launched the Music Census today asking local music community members to share their experiences, challenges, and dreams to shape future investments in tourism and cultural planning. The survey remains open through August 1 and covers Daviess, Hancock, and McLean counties — with results expected later this year to guide decisions for Owensboro’s music scene.  The Owensboro Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Owensboro Museum of Science and History has launched three family programs led by new education programming director Ali Huffman—Wonder Wednesdays offers hands-on science at 11 a.m. and noon, Member Mornings gives exclusive activities for young children on the second Thursday of each month, and Sensory Mornings provides a calming, low-stimulation option on the first Tuesday of each month. These initiatives aim to make learning active and fun for all visitors.  The Owensboro Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Anglers in Kentucky can earn $100 for each invasive black carp they catch — part of the expanded 'Keep, Cool, Call' program that covers 27 states. Fish must be caught legally, clearly photographed, and submitted for verification — with rewards up to $1,000 per month.  WOMI Owensboro

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • This week, Owensboro held a first reading of an ordinance that will let open containers be used all week instead of just on weekends and during special events. City manager Nick Pagan said the change will ease the permit process for businesses — a second reading and vote is scheduled later.  14 News
  • The City of Owensboro is considering new rules that would allow backyard chickens if residents follow certain guidelines (officials are seeking public feedback on the proposal). Residents can review the proposed regulations and share their opinions online.  44 News
  • Today, the Owensboro Spill Control Group conducted a full-scale exercise at English Park on the Ohio River that simulated a diesel fuel leak, with boats deploying a containment boom and the Owensboro Fire Department rescuing two victims — president Luke Fulkerson said the drill helps first responders and local businesses plan for emergencies.  Daviess County
