CRIME NEWS

  • Two men were arrested on July 20 after a high-speed chase on KY 144 near Owensboro ended when a Dodge Charger crashed into a ditch; the driver fled on foot before being caught and a search of the vehicle found meth, marijuana, a liquor bottle and digital scales — both suspects were taken for medical clearance and will face multiple charges.  The Owensboro Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Western High School served as a safe haven for Black students in Owensboro from 1897 until it closed in 1962 amid desegregation, with alumni remembering strong teachers, tight community bonds, and winning sports. A new Western Academy at 417 Elm Street now offers after-school programs for young Black boys — continuing that powerful legacy — while a modest monument nearby — in need of repair — honors the school's impact.  The Owensboro Times
  • Tickets for the 18th annual Voices of Elmwood series at Rosehill Elmwood Cemetery are on sale as the event will run for nine nights starting on September 18 with trailer rides scheduled from September 18 to 20 and 25 to 27 and tent shows from October 2 to 4. The series is produced by Owensboro Museum of Science and History & Daviess County Public Library and will honor local individuals who lived through World War II.  The Owensboro Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • Daviess County’s 12U softball team won the regional opener by beating Missouri 3-2 when Presley Roberts singled home Brynlee Zembrycki in the bottom of the sixth inning. Coach JW O’Bryan said strong pitching from Kenley Evans and Michaela Knight helped the team overcome early jitters and build momentum for future games.  The Owensboro Times
  • Pat Coomes from Stanley began water skiing at age 10 and built a 30-year career by competing at state, regional, and national events. He finished second in the national jump event last year and will try to win a national title this year — his passion for water skiing started on summers along the Ohio River.  The Owensboro Times
  • Last week, 12 Owensboro natives raced in Akron for the 87th FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby World Championship where nine-year-old Benson Tharp (7th in the Rally Stock Racer), 15-year-old Brayden Locher (8th in the Rally Super Stock Racer), and 17-year-old Benji Edds (7th in the Rally Master Racer) competed.
