COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sparky is hosting the Bissell Empty the Shelter event through October 15—reduced adoption fees are $60 for cats and $70 for dogs to help ease shelter burdens, while volunteers work to care for and find homes for the animals. Saving Paws Animal Rescue of Kentucky supports the effort by bringing attention to the need for pet adoptions.  WOMI Owensboro
  • Audubon Area Community Services hosted its 11th-annual Veteran’s Fair at the National Guard Armory where veterans and their families received free food, haircuts, pictures and prizes—about 60 vendors provided vital information on available benefits and resources. The fair introduced many to services they had not known existed.  14 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Owensboro’s riverfront is hosting Illuminate—an immersive art and light experience where visitors can explore an inflatable world of color open tonight through Sunday from 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.—and officials say the event will include more light displays and a drone show this weekend.  14 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet awarded Owensboro Community & Technical College $20,000 for an on-campus recording studio.  Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday, Daviess County Fiscal Court approved attorney and pastor Tim Kline for the Public Library Board in a 3—1 vote with one commissioner dissenting, filling the seat left by former Board President Susan Montalvo-Gesser. Kline said he will listen respectfully and work to reduce tension over ongoing library debates.  The Owensboro Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Green River District Health Department confirmed a death from West Nile Virus in Kentucky while reporting 19 cases statewide—three in Daviess County and two in Henderson County—compared to the average of seven cases in previous years.  TriStateHomepage.com

  • Zeus is a playful Pit Bull Terrier with a striking brindle coat who is waiting for his forever home at It Takes a Village in Owensboro—he was born in July 2021 and has had his vaccinations, microchipping, and vet checks completed.  WOMI Owensboro

  • Local investors bought the former Walgreens building — a 12,700-square-foot property at KY 54 and Fairview Drive with 65 parking spaces — for $1.6M; they are finalizing plans to add a destination tenant with final confirmation expected next week.  The Owensboro Times

  • On October 2, Owensboro’s boys soccer team lost 3 to 2 to South Warren after trailing 3 to 0 — Owensboro Catholic beat Foundation Christian Academy 2 to 1 with a final-minute goal.  The Owensboro Times
