COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the Daviess County Fire Department will present a check at 9 a.m. to Christmas Wish at their Owensboro headquarters—located in the former Big Lots building in Town Square North—as the program opens and invites families to donate used video games to help fulfill children's wishes.  44 News
  • The Daniel Pitino Shelter opens its White Flag emergency warming shelter today through Friday as below-freezing temperatures and wind chills prompt the shelter to provide meals, free transportation via Owensboro Transit System, and overnight space for men, women & children at 501 Walnut Street from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. each night, coordinated by Daviess County Emergency Management and the Homeless Coalition of Ohio Valley.  The Owensboro Times
  • Glenn Funeral Home will host its 14th annual drive-thru toy drive on Dec. 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in its parking lot — community members can also drop off new, unwrapped toys during regular business hours until Dec. 10 to support Toys for Tots and V.E.T.  The Owensboro Times

  • Jonathan Sheriff launched his own business—Zap Electric—after more than ten years working as an electrician in Owensboro, aiming to build local partnerships and spend more time with his family. CULTURE NEWS

  • During Thanksgiving weekend, visitors from near and far gathered at Panther Creek Park on Wayne Bridge Road to ring in the upcoming Christmas holiday — the event drew a large crowd.  Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Owensboro Sanitation Department said leaf collection will occur today in zones 9C, 9D, 10A, and 10B and continue through mid-February. Residents can view an interactive map for zone details — they must bag leaves up to 30 pounds and keep curbs clear of parked vehicles.  44 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • The 2026 girls’ basketball season kicks off tonight with teams from Apollo, Daviess County, Hancock County, McLean County, Owensboro, Owensboro Catholic, and Trinity (Whitesville) ready to begin the season. Coaches and key players expect to compete for region championships and state tournament spots (with returning seniors and promising newcomers leading the way).  The Owensboro Times
